The Apalachin Fire Department was formed in 1913 after a major fire destroyed several businesses on Main Street. Initially a bucket brigade, we protected a 1 mile radius originating at Pennsylvania Ave and Main St. The department soon expanded with the purchase of a hand drawn chemical cart. Since there was no fire station, the cart was housed in a local barn. By the mid 1920's, a station had been built and the chemical cart was transferred to a motorized chassis. The Apalachin Fire Department was on it's way.
Since those early days, the department has seen tremendous growth. We now protect approximately 35 square miles, our membership consists of about 90 volunteers. We operate 10 vehicles out of 3 stations. Station 1 is on Pennsylvania Ave. near Main St., Station 2 is on Route 434 near Tioga Blvd., and Station 3 is on Pennsylvania Ave. near South Apalachin Rd. Our vehicles include 3 pumper/tankers, 1 rescue truck, 3 brush trucks, 2 ambulances, and 1 utility pickup.
