Fire Prevention Tools

Fire Prevention Week is always the full week in October that includes October 9th and spans from Sunday to Sunday.  During this week fire departments across America place a primary focus on the education of their community's youth and their families.

By conducting classroom training, discussions, activities that are fun and focused, the children are given some of the necessary tools to help keep them safe. Commonly, fire departments will also hold an open house for the public to  learn some of the same lessons. This allows the fire department and parents to work together in the protection of the children and our community

As part of Apalachin Fire Department’s fire prevention effort and in partnership with Broome County, during fire prevention week AFD sets up a fire prevention trailer built on the interior to kid size. This allows fire safety discussions, smoke alarm awareness and evacuation training to be directed towards the children while also providing a portable, standardized training environment.

This trailer has the ability to use theatrical smoke, a heated door and active smoke alarms to provide children with a realistic but controlled simulated environment in which they put their fire prevention education, situational awareness and evacuation training together. Apalachin and Tioga Hills elementary with the Apalachin Fire Department have been using this trailer for the past several years for teaching and education duing fire prevention week. If your child has gone through K-3 within either of these schools, they are likley to have experienced this trailer.

During the same week, AFD has our open house coordinated with fire prevention week as a way for the public to come out to Station #1 on Penn Ave and meet the fire department members, see the apparatus, fire equipment, EMS equipment and ambulances. You can also interact with a few games and activities, talk with the firefighters about fire safety and prevention even have hands on use with fire extinguishers. Each year the department also does a demonstration of skills or equipment for the community to see.

As part of open house in 2008, the medical helicopter from Guthrie landed for the community to see and talk with the aircrews, and in 2007 the fire department conducted an extrication utilizing our rescue equipment.

The following has been added to help assist the community with continuing their education outside of fire prevention week.
